Description
This book is considered by many dressage experts to be the most important contribution to classical training in the twentieth century. For generations that would follow, General Decarpentry succeeded in presenting the traditional teachings of great masters like Baucher, D'Aure, and L'Hotte in such a way that allows both amateur and expert to obtain a deeper insight into the art of equitation.

His comprehensive book discusses the philosophy of equitation, the riding master and the choice of horse before introducing the reader to the author's systematic schooling program, covering very early training right up to the most advanced movements; it's completed by comprehensive appendices dealing with longeing, work in hand, long reining, and pillar work. ,

Decarpentry was born in 1878 in France. His father and grandfather were pupils of Baucher and he also developed a keen interest in equitation. He served in the Cadre Noir at Saumur from 1904 to 1913 and again from 1925 to 1931 as the school's second-in-command. He died in Paris in 1956.
