Basic Training for Riding Horses

Ingrid Klimke

Volume 2: The Five-Year-Old Horse

When you conjure up the image of an athletic, forward-moving, and motivated dressage horse, and when you consider the training guidelines espoused by the German Equestrian Federation (FN), there is only one name that deserves to immediately come to mind: Ingrid Klimke. Klimke learned how to ride and train horses correctly, from the absolute basics right through to the highest technical levels, and continues in this vein today—single-mindedly, passionately, and with the utmost success in the disciplines of dressage, eventing, and show jumping.

In Klimke’s three training DVDs, the Olympic champion shares her key ideas for the successful training of horses. The main components of her training method include dressage exercises to improve suppleness and collection; pole work (cavalletti); lower level jumping obstacles; and basic training for cross-country. Klimke is ably supported in the dressage training component by Major Paul Stecken.

This DVD focuses on the following:

  • Dressage: Refinement of rider aids; development and improvement of straightness, impulsion, and suppleness; half pirouette; rein back; counter canter; grid work; dressage outside the arena; and much more.
  • Pole work (cavalletti): Loosening and strengthening of musculature at the walk, trot, and canter.
  • Jumping: Gymnastic series; individual jumps; familiarization with different fences and obstacles; jumping on angles.
  • Cross-country: Work over individual fences and obstacles, as well as a series of fences and obstacles; work over ditches and water.
Ingrid Klimke is an Olympic and world champion who follows in the tracks of her famous father, the dressage legend, Dr. Reiner Klimke. She is the only professional rider in the world who rides successfully at the international level in both dressage and eventing. She trains by her father’s famous motto: “Riding should improve the beauty and strength of the horse.” With this in mind, Klimke trains her horses to be as versatile as possible. She believes that forcing young horses to specialize too soon can prevent them from developing to the best of their ability. Using a multi-disciplinary (cross-training) approach, she enhances their skills and compensates for their weaknesses. Under Ingrid Klimke’s tutelage, your young horse will learn with enjoyment and enthusiasm. The training of horses should be fun, allowing both horse and rider to shine.
